Why we recommend it

Panadería Rosetta is the bakery of the chef Elena Reygadas, opened in 2012 on Calle Colima in Roma Norte, on the same street as her restaurant, Rosetta. Reygadas was named The World's Best Female Chef in 2023, and the bakery draws lines of customers for its pastries and bread. Her restaurant began in 2010 with a reputation for homemade bread and pasta, and her group has since added Lardo in Condesa in 2015 and the Café Nin coffee house in Colonia Juárez in 2017. She was also named Latin America's best female chef in 2014.

The item almost everyone orders is the rol de guayaba, the guava roll. The Infatuation describes it as a croissant-like dough filled with cheese custard and guava jam, and it is the bakery's best-known creation. Beyond that, look for fluffy focaccias, pan de pulque and buttery scones. The bakery also makes traditional Mexican seasonal breads such as pan de muerto in the autumn and rosca de Reyes around 6 January, when the queues grow longer than usual.

Space is tight. There is a small bar inside and a handful of tables on the pavement, so finding a seat is not always easy, and The Infatuation notes that ordering to take away does not always mean a shorter wait. The Infatuation lists reservations through Tock, which is worth checking if you want to be sure of a place.

It suits a breakfast or mid-morning stop for couples and solo travellers, and for anyone who wants to pick up pastries for later. If you fall for the guava roll, it is worth knowing that the restaurant down the street serves Reygadas's cooking in a sit-down setting with one Michelin star. Allow 20 to 40 minutes depending on the line. With limited seating, groups are better off buying to take away.

The bakery is in the heart of Roma Norte, a few doors from the Rosetta restaurant, and Contramar and the BUNA café on Orizaba are in the same neighbourhood. If you are spending a morning exploring Roma's streets, it is easy to combine a guava roll here with coffee elsewhere and a long seafood lunch later in the day.
