Cancún Travel Guide: Things to Do, Attractions & Where to Eat

There are more things to do in Cancún than its beaches suggest. The city was founded in 1970 and is split between the Hotel Zone, a long strip of resorts, beaches and lagoon-side restaurants along Boulevard Kukulcán, and the mainland downtown, where residents shop at Mercado 28, gather in the Parque de las Palapas and eat at taquerías that have been running since the 1970s. Between the two lie the Maya sites of El Rey and San Miguelito, the Museo Maya and the underwater sculptures of MUSA.

The food scene runs from carnitas tacos and Yucatecan breakfasts downtown to lobster houses, Argentine grills and Michelin-selected seafood. Most visitors stay at least five days: two or three for the beaches, museums and markets, and the rest for day trips by ferry to Isla Mujeres, to the cenotes near Puerto Morelos, or inland to Chichén Itzá and down the coast to Tulum. Calm bay-side beaches such as Playa Langosta suit families, while the open Caribbean beaches further south are better for walking and photographs.
