Why we recommend it

The Hoxton, Lloyd Amsterdam occupies one of the most historically interesting buildings in the city. It was commissioned by the Royal Holland Lloyd shipping company and completed in 1921 as a hotel for emigrants travelling to South America, and between 1921 and 1936 it gave temporary shelter mainly to poor Eastern European Jewish emigrants. From 1938 it housed Jewish refugees from Germany, during the Second World War it was used as a detention centre, and after the war it became a prison and, from 1963, a juvenile detention centre.

The building reopened as the Lloyd Hotel in 2004 and was relaunched as The Hoxton, Lloyd Amsterdam in September 2023, with 136 bedrooms. Room types include compact studios, Biggy rooms with larger beds, rooms with two big beds and rooms with a queen bed and a bunk bed, which are practical for families, as well as rooms with large beds under A-frame wooden ceilings in the eaves. The interiors mix the original architecture with the brand's relaxed, residential style.

The Breman Brasserie is named after the building's original architect and serves as the hotel restaurant, the Lobby Bar is open for coffee and drinks, and Barbue operates as a restaurant and event space in the historic part of the building. There are meeting rooms, including a drawing room, and spaces for parties and celebrations.

The hotel suits travellers who like design and history, families who want a bunk-bed room, and anyone happy to stay a little outside the centre in exchange for more space and a calmer setting. Book through the hotel's website, and contact the team by phone or email for group stays and events.

The Eastern Docklands are a showcase of modern Dutch architecture, with converted warehouses and contemporary housing on the old harbour islands. Trams run along the waterfront towards Central Station, about ten minutes away, and cycling into town is easy along the IJ. Nearby are the Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ concert hall, the Veemkade waterfront, Oosterpark a short ride south, and the De Gooyer windmill, beside which Brouwerij 't IJ's Café Struis serves its own beer.
