Why we recommend it

Big Bus Hong Kong runs open-top, hop-on hop-off sightseeing buses on three daytime routes, plus an evening tour in Kowloon. It is a simple way to get an overview of the city on a first visit, especially if you have limited time or prefer not to work out public transport straight away. All routes have pre-recorded commentary.

The Red Route covers Hong Kong Island and starts from Central Star Ferry Pier 7 on Man Kwong Street, running from 10am to 5pm every 45 minutes. The Green Route goes to Stanley on the south side of the island, also starting from Pier 7, and runs from 10.30am to 4.30pm every 30 minutes. The Blue Route covers Kowloon and starts on Salisbury Road in Tsim Sha Tsui, outside the LEGOLAND Discovery Centre entrance at K11 Musea near the Space Museum, running hourly from 10am to 5pm. The Night Tour leaves from the same Kowloon stop at 7pm.

There are several ticket types. The Discover ticket gives 24 hours on one route of your choice plus a one-way Star Ferry trip. The Essential ticket covers all three routes and a return Star Ferry crossing for 24 hours. The 48-hour Explore ticket adds two Star Ferry return trips and a choice of a Peak Tram combo, the sky100 observation deck or a sampan houseboat tour. Multi-day tickets must be used on consecutive days from the date chosen at booking.

The Green Route to Stanley is a useful way to reach the south side of Hong Kong Island without changing buses. Sit on the open top deck for the views, but bring sun protection and water in summer, and a light jacket in winter. Frequencies mean you may wait between buses at some stops, so plan your hop-offs around the timetable.

The buses suit first-time visitors and families who want an easy overview of the city. Combine the ticket with the included Star Ferry ride to cross the harbour, and use the bus to reach sights such as the Peak Tram and Tsim Sha Tsui's waterfront. Check the website for current routes, stops and any service changes before you travel.
