Attraction
The Bund
Shanghai's colonial-era waterfront, a 1.6-kilometre line of 52 banks, hotels and trading houses facing the Lujiazui skyline across the Huangpu River.
The best things to do in Shanghai span two very different riverbanks. On the west side of the Huangpu, Puxi holds the historic centre: the colonial-era waterfront of the Bund, the Ming-dynasty Yu Garden in the Old City, the museums of People's Square and the plane-tree-lined streets of the former French Concession. Across the river, Pudong's Lujiazui district rises to Shanghai Tower, the Oriental Pearl Tower and a long riverside promenade, while canal towns such as Zhujiajiao are an easy metro ride away.
Food is a major reason to come. Shanghai is the home of xiaolongbao soup dumplings and shengjian pan-fried buns, sweet and savoury benbang home cooking and red-braised pork, and the 2026 Michelin Guide lists dozens of starred and Bib Gourmand restaurants alongside thousands of cafés and some of Asia's best-known cocktail bars. Four days is enough for the Bund, the main museums and temples, a river cruise, a walk through the former French Concession and a day trip to a water town, with an extra day or two for the art museums and slower neighbourhood exploring.

Four days covers the Bund, Yu Garden, the Shanghai Museum, a river cruise, the former French Concession and a day trip to Zhujiajiao, with extra days for galleries and food.
The Bund and People's Square put you close to the main sights and metro lines, the former French Concession suits travellers who want leafy streets and cafés, and Lujiazui in Pudong suits skyline views.
From Pudong Airport, take the Maglev to Longyang Road and change to Metro Line 2, or ride Line 2 directly to People's Square in about an hour. Hongqiao Airport is on Lines 2 and 10.
Luxury hotels on the Bund are expensive, but the metro is cheap and local dumplings, noodles and neighbourhood restaurants are good value.
Shanghai is generally considered safe for visitors; take normal care with valuables in crowded areas such as East Nanjing Road and on national holidays, and follow official warnings in typhoon season.
