Good to know
Wild Great Wall Adventures is a Beijing-based tour company founded in November 2011 by Rick Wang, with an office in Xiaoyunli, Chaoyang district. It specialises in hiking on the Great Wall, from short guided day walks to treks of up to four days, and also offers camping trips, photography tours and airport layover tours from Beijing.
Day hikes cover sections including Jiankou, Mutianyu, Jinshanling, Gubeikou, Huanghuacheng and Xishuiyu, and can be guided or self-guided. The company's policies stress no deposit or prepayment at booking, no factory shopping stops and no hidden costs. Day tours include lunch, a guide and private vehicle transfers, and multi-day tours include a set number of meals.
The three-day Gubeikou to Mutianyu trek shows the range of wall you can see with the company. The first day runs from Gubeikou village past the General Tower and the 24 Window Tower, with a detour through Spider Valley where the wall crosses military land, to Jinshanling. The second day continues from Jinshanling's East Gate past the Black Tower and the Big Jinshan Tower towards Simatai West, on paths with loose rock and steep gravel. The third day climbs from Xizhazi village to the Zhengbei Tower at Jiankou and follows the wall east, with scrambles and a dangerous stretch known as Ox Horn Edge, before reaching the restored wall at Mutianyu, where you can descend by cable car, on foot or by summer toboggan. Nights are spent in farmhouse guesthouses.
Pickup from your Beijing hotel is included, usually around 7.30am, and the price covers transport, an English-speaking guide, admission fees and the listed meals. Tips, the cable car and other drinks are extra. The tour is rated moderate and priced for groups of one to nine people, with discounts for children and students. It operates all year, though March to December is suggested as the best season.
For the hikes, bring hiking shoes or boots, a backpack, sun protection, long sleeves and trousers for overgrown sections in summer, plus extra water and snacks.
The company suits fit travellers who want to experience the unrestored wall with transport, guiding and meals taken care of. Contact it by email at [email protected] or by phone or WeChat on +86 185 1025 4530.
