Restaurant
Qunu at the Saxon
Qunu is the main restaurant of The Saxon hotel in Sandhurst, serving lunch and dinner daily with a menu that mixes local and international flavours.
Marble on the Keyes Art Mile in Rosebank is chef David Higgs's live-fire restaurant, cooking steak, seafood, vegetables and bread over a large wood-fired grill.
Good to know
Marble sits high up in the Trumpet on Keyes building, on the corner of Keyes and Jellicoe avenues in Rosebank, at the heart of the Keyes Art Mile. It is led by partner and chef David Higgs, one of South Africa's best-known chefs, and it is built around a simple idea: contemporary South African cooking rooted in the country's love of cooking over fire. The 2026 Luxe Restaurant Awards gave it a one-star award and a Pioneer Award.
The centrepiece of the dining room is a large wood-fired grill, and almost everything passes over the coals at some point, not only meat. The menu is divided into starters, salads, a steakhouse section, seafood, vegetarian dishes and desserts, so it works for a mixed group even if not everyone wants a large steak. Seafood, poultry, vegetables and bread all pick up smoke and char from the fire. Ask the staff about the day's cuts and specials, and leave room for sides and dessert.
The bar is a destination in its own right, with a long cocktail list, a serious wine cellar and bar snacks for those who want a lighter evening. From the upper floors there are views north-west over the treetops of the northern suburbs towards the Magaliesberg mountains, which are at their best around sunset. Arriving a little early for a drink at the bar is an easy way to start the evening.
Marble suits celebrations, business dinners and anyone who wants a polished night out. It is at the top end of the city's price range, and smart-casual dress fits the room. Book ahead, especially for Friday and Saturday evenings, by phone or by email to the restaurant, and mention any dietary needs when you do; the separate vegetarian section of the menu helps. Ask for a table near the grill if you enjoy watching the chefs at work.
Rosebank is one of the easiest areas for visitors to get around, with the Gautrain station, the Rosebank Mall and several hotels close by. The Keyes Art Mile also has galleries and design shops, so it is easy to combine a gallery visit in the afternoon with an early drink and dinner. Ride-hailing apps are the simplest way to get home afterwards.
