There are several reasons why you could experience a sore vagina. This article, however, focuses on one of the common reasons behind your sore vagina – chemical vaginitis. Spoiler alert, you could be the cause of your problem – read on!
What is Chemical Vaginitis?
Vaginitis is simply the inflammation of the vagina. This is caused by an alteration in the normal state of the vagina. Foreign bodies, abnormal substances, microorganisms, or an imbalance in the usual state of the vagina are conditions usually associated with the inflammation of the vagina.
Chemical vaginitis occurs when this alteration is caused by a chemical that is knowingly or unknowingly introduced into the vagina. These chemicals, sometimes cause the vagina to smell like chemicals. Some of these chemical substances are contained in some of the things we use. Things as little as soap, washes, cream, as well as drugs, especially the ones not prescribed by a doctor, are all in this category.
The commonest culprit is Caustic soda in soap. Unknowingly some ladies have used some soaps or washes that contained this and have led to some really bad complications.
How Harmful is Chemical Vaginitis?
Foreign bodies in the vagina cause inflammation and the body trying to recover from this inflammation can then lead to matting. Imagine the vagina as two hands apposed together tightly. It has 2 walls that are touching each other. Anything that affects one side affects the other.

Let’s see inflammation as a sort of injury to the walls of the vagina. Due to the fact that these walls are closely apposed, they will heal together and this causes a sort of matting together of the walls. As a result of this, the walls of the vagina are fused together, leading to numerous complications.
Some Complications Caused By Chemical Vaginitis
- Inability to have sex
- Painful sex
- Problems with menstruation
- Inability to give birth
- Pelvic scarring
- Chronic pelvic pain
- Ectopic pregnancy
How Then Do I Clean My Vagina?
Naturally, your vagina is self-cleansing. She’s a whole big ass Queen. She knows just how to take care of herself. The extra measures you might want to take are:
- Using clean water to rinse the vagina
- Using a very mild soap
- Some specific intimate washes may also be good.
Habits such as douching too should be discouraged
Going Down History Lane…
In the Southwestern part of Nigeria, in a bid to get pregnant, some ladies consult herbalists and other senior colleagues to the doctors. They are usually given this stick that contains really harsh substances of which one of them is caustic soda, they are told to insert the stick deep into the vagina to have children.
Due to ignorance and desperation, some of these women do it, this stick usually causes inflammation and ends up leading to fusion of the vagina wall. This leads to a problem worse than what they had initially. The hope of having a child is totally dashed at this point, only by a miracle can she have a child again. Other reproductive techniques are usually advised.
A costly mistake? Yes! It definitely is. Chemical vaginitis can be avoided by taking the right precautions.
