We all want baby-soft, even-toned, no filter needed, Instagram slaying skin. And we go to various lengths for it. everyone wants to be called the dude or lady with perfect glowing skin. And lord knows there are enough DIYs, body washes and scrubs, glow oils, organic creams on the market to help with this. Hell, the skincare industry is evolving every day, I mean, who knew snake oil could cure stretch marks? Do snakes even have oil? We will talk about that later.
The point is, everyone wants really beautiful skin, even older people. Nobody likes wrinkles and crows feet and crepey skin and really raggedy skin. And most people still do not want to believe that committing to certain simple rules will help in achieving the goal. What’s the goal? Having drool-worthy, envy causing, instant glamming, every minute glowing skin! You don’t really have to spend so much on skincare products, and if you follow these simple steps, you’ll only need moisturizer, sunscreen, and a camera!
Before we begin, however, there are things you should absolutely not do to, with and on your skin.
How To Get A Glowing Skin
♥
Do Not Pop A Pimple
No, never! Resist the temptation! Even if it looks red and juicy and ready to pop. Resist it. Grit your teeth and say no. I know girls find it particularly hard to resist those nice little heads, get over it! It’s not chocolate. Popping pimples will only increase your chances of getting an infection, an inflammation, or a really nasty scar.
Do Not Leave Lemon Or Lime Juice On Your Skin
And do not go out in the sun too! Now, while lemon and lime have some anti-oxidant properties and some people believe they could be used as a home remedy for acne, getting lime and lemon juice on your skin is not a good idea. And it is worse when you are out in the sun. you could get a change in skin pigmentation that could last for a good, long while.
Do Not Get Tattoos With Coloured Ink
Removing tattoos can be quite painful and it is even more so when you’ve got colored ink. Colors such as white, green, and yellow are a particular thorn in the flesh and unless you want some bad scarring from laser beams, please stay away from colored ink. If you must go under the needle, stick with blacks or dark blues. Thank you!
Do Not Pick At Your Skin
Acne, skin tags, blackheads, little boils, insect bites, whatever it is that you have got, please do not pick at your skin. You’ll only irritate it the more. Leave the spots hands free, treat it properly, and drink some juice while you’re at it. Do not pick at your skin, itchy fingers. Glowing skin comes at a price, you know.

Do Not Use Too Much Soap
Contrary to the opinion that bathing with lots of soap keeps your body clean, lots of soap robs your skin of the important elements that prevent external substances from getting into your body. Especially your face. And vigorous scrubbing doesn’t remove the dirt from your skin, it only increases the number of tiny lesions on your skin and the number of flares and infections and diseases that you’ll get.
Stay Away From Hot Baths
I heard your scoff. Stay away from hot baths? Even in the rainy season? No. As a hot water bathing expert, I think I can safely say that using hot water isn’t good for your skin. It dries out the skin, can cause itching and rashes and rob of your skin of its natural proteins and oils. If you really have to use hot water, do not spend the entire day in the bathroom. You could also reduce the water temperature, make it lukewarm. And one more thing, pat your body dry. Not rub like you’re scrubbing a black pot, pat gently with a towel.
Glowing Skin Doesn’t Mean Exfoliate Or Die
While there are a number of people who have never had an exfoliation and will probably never will, there is also a group of people who have taken exfoliation to the next level. Exfoliation does give you glowing skin because it gets rid of dead cells, but too much of it will leave you with really irritated skin. If you are going to exfoliate, stick to a weekly routine. And if you do use anti-aging products, beware of AHA. It is a chemical exfoliator on its own.
So, that’s our little list of don’ts’. In addition to these, you might want to drink more water every day, drink less alcohol, and cut back on smoking. Or you could quit entirely.
Now, that you have accepted and committed to the don’ts’, you are ready to add a few things to your shopping list.
Skin Foods: Glow Or Glow!
Your diet is really important. Now, do not get scared. No one is asking you to change your diet; we are only asking that you incorporate these food items into your daily meals. And if you eat them occasionally, try to change that. Your diet not only works wonders for your heart, liver, and kidneys, it can also affect the aging of your skin. We have picked the easily accessible and available foods you can get from the corner store on your street. You don’t have to go all the way to the market unless it is absolutely necessary.
Tomatoes
Some people like to eat their tomatoes raw, others like to peel off the skin and then eat it. Some still like to blend it, fry it, or include it in other dishes. However you like it, tomatoes are great skin food. They are a great source of vitamin C, who knew? And they also provide carotenoids, which protect the skin from sun damage and may prevent the skin from wrinkling.
Fatty Fish
In case you don’t know what they are, mackerel is what Yorubas call ‘eja titus’, Bini people call it scubien; herring is what the Yorubas call ‘eja shawa’. Both fish are delicious and fatty. Salmon is also a fatty fish. These fish contain omega -3 fatty acids that keep your skin thick, supple, and moisturized. They are also good sources of vitamin E and zinc.

Avocados
These babies are a versatile food. They simply do everything! And the reason why they are so loved is that they are high in healthy fats! You can eat as much as you want without worrying about the issues that come with consuming bad fats. Avocados contain vitamin C and E which are antioxidants that protect your skin from UV damage. You might want to make sure your skincare products have got some avocado oil.
Walnuts
These nuts are meaty, containing more omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids than most nuts. They also contain zinc, proteins, vitamin E, and selenium. All of these are guaranteed to make you look younger and help your skin to function properly.
Dark Chocolate
Hallelujah! Another reason to eat chocolate. Take note, it is dark chocolate, not white chocolate. Not chocolate topped with hazelnuts and whipped cream. Not chocolate swimming in a sea of vanilla ice cream or sauce. Lol. When choosing a dark chocolate brand, ensure it is high in antioxidants and contains at least 70% cocoa. That will keep the sugar to a minimum. Cocoa contains antioxidants that may improve wrinkles, blood flow, hydration, and texture. And you feel gooey after too!
Sweet Potatoes
Who knew? At least, they’re better than Irish potatoes. Sweet potatoes are rich in beta carotene, a nutrient also found in plants like carrots and spinach. Beta carotene when consumed, is converted to vitamin A in the body. It also acts as a natural sunblock. And it also protects the cells of the skin from sun exposure.
Green Tea
Green tea contains catechins which are very powerful antioxidants that protect your skin against sun damage, redness, improve hydration, thickness, and elasticity. And they smell great too! Word of advice: do not add milk.
Red Grapes
Resveratrol is a compound found in the skin of red grapes. It is an antioxidant that slows the skin’s aging process by impairing harmful free radicals that damage the skin. This doesn’t mean you should begin to drink red wine by the casks, nope. Eat more red grapes and berries. You can include them in your lunch menu or as an after-dinner snack.
There you have it. Skin foods that will make you glow by thunder! Now, these things do not work like magic. Truly glowing skin won’t come as quickly as you can snap your fingers. You have to be really consistent and faithful. Incorporate these foods into your daily meals, follow the don’ts rules, and drink lots of water. Also, get facial massages as often as possible, too. And if you like to wear makeup, ensure your foundation doubles as a moisturizer and sun protector. And make sure your concealer is creamy and lightweight, not cakey. We recommend the ONE foundation from Oriflame.
