Good to know
Baker & Spice on Anfu Road is a bakery café run by the Wagas group, the Shanghai company founded in 1999 by the Dane John Christensen and his business partner Jackie Yun, which grew to around 250 restaurants by 2022. Baker & Spice was started in 2010, and this shop at 195 Anfu Road opened that year as a small corner bakery, before Anfu Road became popular.
Today the street is lined with independent fashion and cosmetics shops, bookshops and cafés, and it forms the second half of the popular Wukang Road and Anfu Road citywalk suggested by the city government. Baker & Spice is a useful fixed point among shops that change quickly, open from very early in the morning until late at night, which makes it handy for a breakfast before the walk or a late snack afterwards.
The menu covers bakes, brunch and pasta. Breakfast favourites include a scrambled egg and bacon croissant and a grilled sambal prawn omelette, and pasta dishes such as penne with chicken and pesto are served through the day. The bakery counter has breads and pastries to take away.
It suits families, solo travellers and anyone who wants a familiar Western-style breakfast or brunch in the former French Concession. Allow 45 minutes for a meal. A 2026 guide lists opening hours of 6am to 10pm daily.
Anfu Road is also home to many of the stops the city's walking guide picks out, including a branch of %Arabica, the SunFlour bakery, the HARMAY beauty store with its industrial walls, and 13DE MARZO at No. 322, the café arm of a Parisian-inspired fashion brand with a giant teddy bear at the door. Starting the walk at Wukang Mansion near Jiaotong University station and finishing on Anfu Road means Baker & Spice can serve as a late-morning stop at the end of the route.
Anfu Road runs through Xuhui in the western part of the former French Concession. The city's citywalk route ends at Changshu Road station on Lines 1 and 7, and the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre and the Duozhuayu Bookstore are also on Anfu Road.
