Why we recommend it

The Starbucks Reserve Roastery on West Nanjing Road is far more than a branch of a global chain. It opened in December 2017 in the HKRI Taikoo Hui development, and according to the city government it has welcomed around 18 million visitors since, averaging more than 5,200 a day and passing 10,000 on peak days. Locals call it a city living room, and it has become one of the sights of West Nanjing Road in its own right.

The building covers about 2,700 square metres over two floors. A two-storey copper cask stands near the entrance, and the ceiling is made of some 10,000 handmade wooden hexagonal tiles. Coffee is roasted on site in a large industrial roaster, and the main coffee bar is 27 metres long, the longest at any Starbucks when it opened. The head roaster trained for nine months in Seattle. The roastery also houses a Princi bakery, the Italian baker's first in Asia, with more than 80 items baked on site, and a Teavana tea bar made from recycled materials on a 3D printer.

The menu runs far beyond the usual Starbucks list. There are around ten coffee varieties, cocktails and a Shanghai blend flavoured with candied jujube and kumquat peel. Pour-overs and other brewing methods are demonstrated at the bars, and the 2025 World Brewers Cup champion Peng Jinyang has appeared here. The roastery also runs a programme teaching coffee-making to children with autism, which is celebrated each year at its anniversary in December.

Expect crowds, especially at weekends and on holidays, when queues can form at the door. Weekday mornings are the calmest time to visit. Prices are higher than at a normal Starbucks. It suits coffee lovers, families and anyone wanting a comfortable break from shopping on West Nanjing Road. Allow about an hour, longer if you eat at the bakery.

The city government's 2025 listing gives opening hours of 8am to 11pm daily, and an earlier listing noted later closing on Fridays and Saturdays, so check before a late visit. Jing'an Temple station on Lines 2, 7 and 14 is a short walk along West Nanjing Road.
