Good to know
Honeymoon Guesthouse is a garden guesthouse on Jalan Bisma in central Ubud, owned by Janet DeNeefe, the author, cook and founder of the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival and the Ubud Food Festival, who has worked in food and culture in Ubud for more than 30 years. It is part of the same family of businesses as Casa Luna restaurant on Jalan Raya Ubud, and it offers a more personal, affordable alternative to the big resorts.
The guesthouse has 46 rooms arranged across three traditional compounds, entered through hand-carved stone gateways and set among gardens with quiet corners. Room types include two-storey cottages, a suite with a king bed and air-conditioned superior and deluxe rooms, each for up to two guests. Reception is open 24 hours, and the staff can arrange transport to and from the airport and to temples and rice fields.
There is a swimming pool, a spa offering massage treatments and yoga classes, which cover most of what a visitor needs without leaving the grounds. The biggest draw for many guests is the Casa Luna Cooking School, which runs hands-on Balinese cooking classes in the guesthouse gardens. Stays can be combined with cooking, yoga or honeymoon packages, and booking direct gives a discount on cooking classes, spa treatments and transport.
The guesthouse is also DeNeefe's home, and guests may see her in the garden or at breakfast. Its Honeymoon Kitchen serves food cooked as it is at home in Bali, using recipes from her own kitchen. The honeymoon package includes four nights, a couples' massage and a romantic dinner at Indus restaurant. Food lovers will also appreciate the Honeymoon Bakery, run by the same family, and the Casa Luna and Indus restaurants. On Sundays the guesthouse hosts mahjong, an afternoon of games, drinks and meeting other guests. Reservations can be made by phone or by email.
Honeymoon Guesthouse suits couples, solo travellers and anyone interested in Balinese food and culture who wants a central, characterful base at a moderate price. Jalan Bisma is within walking distance of the centre of Ubud, and the street also has Copper Kitchen, Bar and Rooftop at Bisma Eight for an evening drink.
