Why we recommend it

The Museo de Arte Moderno de Medellín, known to everyone as the MAMM, is the city's leading venue for modern and contemporary art. Founded in 1978, it was the last of Colombia's big modern art museums to be created, after those in Bogotá, Cali and Barranquilla. It started life in the Carlos E. Restrepo district, moved to the Talleres Robledo building in Ciudad del Río, and has grown from about 6,000 visitors a year in its early home to around 110,000.

The museum's architecture is part of the attraction. In 2009 it launched an international competition for an extension behind the Talleres Robledo building, won by 51-1 Arquitectos working with the Medellín firm Ctrl G. Their design takes its cue from the informal houses that climb the city's hillsides, stacking terraces linked by staircases. The extension opened on 2 September 2015 and took the museum to 9,910 square metres, adding exhibition halls, laboratories, a 256-seat theatre and public terraces that anyone can use.

The collection is especially strong on Débora Arango, the Medellín-born painter, and the museum keeps returning to her work; an immersive experience, Débora Arango. Mirar sin miedo, has been extended to 1 November 2026. Temporary shows change regularly. The autumn 2026 season, running until 28 March 2027, includes exhibitions by Pedro Gómez-Egaña, Gala Porras-Kim and Astrid González and a sound installation by Félix Blume, alongside Iván Argote's Sentir tu peso and a photography display drawn from the MAMM collection.

Cine MAMM screens current films in the museum theatre, which is programmed from Thursday to Sunday, and the museum also runs a library, free online courses, readings in the galleries and late-opening evening events, many of them free. Tickets for exhibitions and films are sold online. Check the website for the day's hours before you go, as opening times are posted daily.

The MAMM suits anyone interested in contemporary Colombian art and architecture, and the terraces are a pleasant place to sit. Allow one and a half to two hours. The museum is on Carrera 44 in Ciudad del Río, and a visit to the galleries combines well with an evening film screening in the theatre.
