Good to know
Libertario Coffee Roasters is a Colombian specialty coffee roaster with coffee shops in Bogotá, Cartagena and Medellín, and branches abroad in Costa Rica and Mexico, according to Food & Pleasure. Its Cartagena café is in Getsemaní, on the corner of Calle San Andrés, with the entrance around the corner on Calle de la Media Luna, opposite Café Havana. The company roasts its beans every single day and focuses on specialty coffee from smaller producers; the Cartagena Explorer guide notes that it invests 3% of its sales in a fund for sustainable development.
The coffee list has playful names such as Libre, Rock, Punk, Paz and Impacto, with a mix of single origins and blends. Many can be ordered in sizes of one to three cups, while some special lots are served by the single cup only; black coffee is brought with extra in a small glass beaker so you can top up. There are also espresso drinks such as cappuccinos, cold brews and teas.
The food menu covers brunch and snacks: sandwiches, toasts, waffles and parfaits, together with cakes, cookies and pastries. Cartagena Explorer recommends the chocolate brownie cake with nuts. The space is small but has tables of several sizes and a bar, so it works for a solo coffee, a meeting or a small group.
Libertario suits coffee enthusiasts who want to try well-sourced Colombian beans prepared with care, as well as anyone looking for breakfast in Getsemaní before exploring the neighbourhood. The brand also runs tasting and coffee-preparation experiences and sells its coffee online, so ask in the shop if you are interested; Cartagena Explorer also lists three Libertario shops in Bogotá and one in Mexico City.
Cartagena Explorer recorded opening hours of 08:00 to 17:00 daily during a 2024 visit; check the brand's website or social media for current times. The café's phone number is +57 322 511 2476. It is in the heart of Getsemaní, a few minutes' walk from the Plaza de la Trinidad and the Torre del Reloj, and opposite Café Havana. Allow half an hour to an hour, longer if you stay for brunch.
