Museo del Pisco
The flagship of a small group of pisco bars, near the Plaza de Armas, offering guided tastings of Peru's grape brandy, pisco sour sessions and inventive…
A long-running live music bar and cultural space on Calle Plateros, with nightly bands playing rock, reggae, Latin and Andean music and free entry.
Good to know
Ukukus is one of Cusco's best-known live music bars, set in the heart of the old town on Calle Plateros, one of the streets leading off the Plaza de Armas. It calls itself a bar and cultural centre, and its walls are covered in colourful murals with an Andean influence and artwork from Cusco and other parts of Peru, some of it by well-known national artists.
Music is the reason to come. Bands play every night, and the line-up ranges across rock, jazz, reggae, Latin rhythms and Andean folk, so the atmosphere changes from one evening to the next. There are plenty of tables for those who want to watch, and a dance floor for those who want to join in. Entry has been free, which makes it an easy place to drop into after dinner. Guides have described the space as cosy but edgy, and as well as concerts it has hosted live art sessions, in keeping with its role as a cultural centre.
Ukukus has been reported as opening at 18:00 every day, staying open until 02:00 from Monday to Friday, until 04:00 on Saturdays and until midnight on Sundays. Opening times can change, so check before you go.
The bar suits groups of friends, solo travellers and anyone who prefers live music to a DJ, and the varied programme means even people who do not usually go clubbing can find a night they enjoy. The art on the walls also makes it an interesting space to look around before the music starts. Keep an eye on drinks and belongings, as you would in any busy bar.
Calle Plateros is one of the city's nightlife streets, also home to República del Pisco, so it is easy to combine Ukukus with a pisco bar or a meal nearby. The Italian pizzeria Carpe Diem at Plateros 361, known for handmade pasta and pizza, is just a few doors along if you want to eat first, and República del Pisco serves snacks with its drinks. The Plaza de Armas, with Paddy's Irish pub and the Mama Africa club in the arcades, is a minute or two away.
