Good to know
Jurema Bar is a cachaça bar on Rua Morais e Vale, between the neighbourhoods of Glória and Lapa, that has quickly made a name for itself. In 2026 it won the award for the best bar food in Veja Rio's Comer e Beber guide, and its chef, Pedro Attayde, was named the city's revelation chef in the same awards.
Time Out Rio describes the style as urban tropical, with references to Indigenous and Afro-Brazilian culture in the use of herbs, fruits, spirits and artisanal liqueurs. The kitchen draws on ingredients from the nearby Feira da Glória street market. Dishes highlighted by Time Out include cured and roasted pork belly, sliced roast beef with tartare sauce, charred mushrooms with a jiló babaganoush, chicken coxinhas with coalhada and curried cauliflower croquetas, with desserts such as rabanada with coffee foam and a sweetcorn brûlée. At weekends and on public holidays there is also a lunch menu that changes monthly.
Cachaça is the focus of the bar. The cocktail list, created by bartender Zurriê, includes special caipirinhas such as one made with uva de cheiro grapes, a drink called Capivara de Jesus and a Jurema Spritz with cajuína, dry sparkling wine and Lena Prata cachaça. In September 2026 the bar launched its own numbered batch, Cachaça do Jurema, made with the producer Lena, and it hosted a Rua da Cachaça street event with tastings, samba and a caipirinha workshop.
The room has green and white walls painted with humorous phrases, exposed brick, snake plants in vases, a traditional earthenware water filter, photographs and an open kitchen. Time Out notes that it is often full at weekends, so arrive early for a table.
According to a September 2026 report in Diário do Rio, the bar opens on Monday from 17:00 to midnight, on Wednesday from 17:00 to 01:00, from Thursday to Saturday from 12:00 to 02:00 and on Sunday from 12:00 to 20:00, and is closed on Tuesdays. Check before going, as hours can change.
Jurema suits groups of friends and couples who want creative Brazilian food and drinks in a relaxed setting. It makes a good start to a night out, with Carioca da Gema on Avenida Mem de Sá in Lapa and Rio Scenarium on Rua do Lavradio in Centro for live samba afterwards.
