Good to know
The Palacio Duhau – Park Hyatt is one of the most elegant hotels in Buenos Aires, built around a real Recoleta palace. The brothers Luis and Alberto Duhau commissioned the mansion in the early 1930s from the architect León Dourge, and their descendants lived there for decades. Inspired by the Château du Marais near Paris and built with reconstituted stone imported from France, the palace has a symmetrical neoclassical façade with four double-height columns, a triangular pediment and a mansard roof.
An investment group restored the palace and added a new building facing Calle Posadas, and the hotel opened on 12 July 2006. Today the two buildings hold 165 rooms, suites and so-called palaces. Rooms in the historic Palacio have a refined residential feel, while those in the Posadas building look out over the palace and its gardens. The gardens are the hotel's great asset, a quiet space in the middle of the city used for relaxing and for events.
The hotel's restaurant, Duhau Restaurante & Vinoteca, focuses on Argentine cooking over wood fire, has terraces overlooking the gardens and is recommended by the Michelin Guide. The Michelin Guide describes a menu that includes Angus and wagyu tasting options cooked over embers. La Vinoteca offers wine and cheese tastings, including a dedicated cheese room. Spanish-language sources also mention the Oak Bar, for cigars and cocktails. A spa and a pool complete the facilities, and the hotel displays a private art collection.
The hotel is pet-friendly, with a weight limit for pets. It is also a popular venue for weddings, with the Posadas Ballroom, its largest room at 260 square metres, seating up to 160 guests.
It suits couples, honeymooners and travellers who want a calm, garden setting with the convenience of Recoleta on the doorstep. Prices are at the top end of the city's range. Book through the Park Hyatt website, and ask for a garden view if that matters to you.
The hotel is at Avenida Alvear 1661, a short distance along the same avenue from the Alvear Palace Hotel at number 1891. The two-Michelin-star restaurant Aramburu is also in Recoleta, and the Michelin Guide suggests the Palacio Duhau to guests dining there.
It was built in the early 1930s for the Duhau brothers by the architect León Dourge and opened as a Park Hyatt hotel on 12 July 2006.
