Hotel
The Manila Hotel
A heritage grand hotel opened in 1912 at the edge of Rizal Park, with a MacArthur Suite, a heritage museum and classic restaurants.
A Makati landmark since 1976, with twin wings on Ayala and Makati Avenues, a grand colonial-style lobby, two pools and the French restaurant Old Manila.
Good to know
The Peninsula Manila has stood at the corner of Ayala Avenue and Makati Avenue since it opened on 14 September 1976, and it remains one of the best-known addresses in the Makati business district. The hotel is owned by Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, the group behind the Peninsula brand, and occupies two wings named after the avenues they face, Ayala and Makati.
The public spaces are the hotel's signature, with an opulent, colonial-style character, and the lobby has long been a meeting point for Manila's business and civic leaders. The Michelin Guide lists 493 rooms, and the bedrooms are contemporary and apartment-style, with high-rise city views, quality beds and oversized marble bathrooms.
For dining, Old Manila is the hotel's French restaurant and is included in the Michelin Guide. The lobby bar is the place for afternoon drinks and people-watching. Facilities include indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a spa, a sauna, a gym, a beauty salon and a business centre. Children aged 11 and under stay free when using existing beds, and the hotel is non-smoking, with a designated smoking area.
The hotel has a place in recent political history too. On 29 November 2007, during what became known as the Manila Peninsula rebellion, a group of detained officers led by Senator Antonio Trillanes IV took over part of the hotel before security forces moved in. The episode is long past, but it shows how central the hotel is to life in Makati.
For sightseeing, the hotel works well as a base for the Makati side of the city. The Ayala Museum, with its historical dioramas and pre-colonial gold, is a short walk away, and Helm and the Bib Gourmand restaurants around Ayala Triangle and Legazpi Village are close by. On Saturday mornings, the Salcedo market is an easy outing before the day gets hot.
Check-in is from 2pm and check-out is at noon. The location is very convenient for Makati: Greenbelt, Ayala Triangle Gardens, the Ayala Museum and many restaurants are within walking distance, and Legazpi and Salcedo villages are close by. Intramuros and Rizal Park are a taxi ride away, so allow time for traffic. The hotel suits business travellers, families wanting two pools and couples who enjoy a classic luxury hotel with a strong sense of place.
