Why we recommend it

The Minor Basilica and Metropolitan Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, known simply as Manila Cathedral, stands on a site that has held the city's principal church since 1571. It became a cathedral in 1579 and has had to be rebuilt eight times, after fires, earthquakes, typhoons and, most recently, the near destruction of the seventh building during the Battle of Manila in 1945. The present cathedral was built between 1954 and 1958 and consecrated on 7 December 1958.

The design is neo-Romanesque, laid out on a Latin cross plan, with a façade that echoes the previous cathedral and carries statues of saints carved in travertine. The bronze central doors have eight relief panels telling the history of the cathedral. Inside, a bronze statue of the Immaculate Conception about 2.7 metres tall stands above the high altar, beneath a baldachin and the dome. Most of the stained glass windows were designed by Galo Ocampo in 1964, and the crypt holds former archbishops of Manila.

The cathedral's pipe organ, built by Pels & Zoon in 1958, was restored in 2025 with hundreds of additional pipes and a new console, and now has 6,446 pipes, making it the largest pipe organ in Southeast Asia. It is worth timing a visit for a sung Mass if you want to hear it. The building was elevated to a minor basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1981 and has welcomed three popes: Paul VI in 1970, John Paul II in 1981 and Francis in 2015.

Mass is celebrated on weekdays at 7.30am and 12.10pm, on Saturdays at 7.30am, and on Sundays at 8am, 10am and 6pm. Visitors are welcome outside service times, but this is a working cathedral, so dress modestly and avoid walking around during Mass. The parish office, which handles tour requests, is open from Tuesday to Sunday and closed on Mondays and holidays. Allow 30 to 45 minutes.

The cathedral stands in the northern half of Intramuros, a few minutes' walk from Fort Santiago and San Agustin Church. Visit early or late in the day when the square is cooler, and combine it with the walled city's other sights. It suits travellers interested in architecture and sacred music, and anyone wanting a quiet pause in the middle of a sightseeing day.
