13C Bar in the Back
An izakaya-style wine bar hidden behind 13C, Amman's largest wine and spirits shop, pairing flights, cocktails and small plates on a cosy patio.
A quirky rooftop bar on Rainbow Street decorated with recycled car parts, with a restored Volkswagen van on the roof and views over East Amman.
Good to know
Sekrab is the most eccentric of the rooftop bars on Rainbow Street, and the one people remember. The décor is made from discarded and recycled items, including car parts, giving the place a junk-chic, industrial look. The roof terrace, reached by three flights of stairs, is decorated with old automobile structures, colourful pipes and strings of light bulbs, and its centrepiece is a restored Volkswagen camper van with a table inside it.
From the roof, the views stretch across the hills of East Amman, and on a clear evening the city lights spread out in every direction. The bar serves a range of drinks, and the setting is at its best around sunset and later in the evening, when the lights come on.
Sekrab suits groups of friends, couples looking for somewhere with character and anyone celebrating a special night. The atmosphere is relaxed, creative and a little rough around the edges in a deliberate way, which makes it a contrast with the polished hotel lounges of west Amman. The bar has long been known for weekly music events, so ask what is on when you visit.
Expect a climb to reach the roof, which may be difficult for anyone with limited mobility. Dress is casual. Table space in and around the van is limited and popular, so arrive early if you want to sit in it, especially at weekends. As elsewhere in Amman, alcohol prices are relatively high, so check the menu before ordering a round.
The bar is on Rainbow Street in Jabal Amman, within easy walking distance of Cantaloupe, Books@Cafe and Al Quds Falafel, so it fits naturally into a bar crawl along the street. First Circle and its taxis are at the western end of the street, and Downtown is a short ride below.
Sekrab also appears in several guidebooks and travel features as one of the city's most original rooftops, so expect a mix of locals and visitors.
If you want to see Amman's more alternative side after dark, combine Sekrab with Books@Cafe nearby, and finish the night with kunafa or a late bite as the street begins to empty.
