Good to know
Fontainebleau Miami Beach is a large oceanfront resort on Collins Avenue in Mid-Beach. The hotel quotes the architect Morris Lapidus on its website: if you create the stage and it is grand, everyone who enters will play their part. With more than 1,500 guest rooms and suites, it is a resort in its own right, with enough restaurants, bars and leisure facilities to fill a stay.
The choice of food and drink is huge. Restaurants include Hakkasan, Prime 54, La Côte, Vida, Fresh, Arkadia Grill and Chez Bon Bon, plus beachside dining and in-room service. For nightlife there is LIV, which the hotel calls an icon of Miami Beach nightlife, along with Bleau Bar, Glow Bar and other lounges. Lapis Spa offers treatments and a fitness centre, and the pool area has cabanas.
The beach is a big part of a stay here, with chaise lounges and water sports such as water skiing, jet skiing and windsurfing. Because the resort is so large, it suits travellers who like having everything on site: groups of friends, families who want pools and beach space, and anyone planning a night out at LIV without needing a taxi home.
The scale will not suit everyone. As with any resort of this size, expect busy public areas at weekends and during major events, and if you prefer intimacy, a smaller hotel in South Beach may suit you better. Check the hotel's offers, such as pre-paid and suite packages, before booking, as terms vary.
Because there is so much on site, it is worth looking at the restaurant and bar list before you arrive and booking the places you most want to try, particularly Hakkasan and Prime 54 at weekends. If you plan to go to LIV, check the event calendar in advance, as nights and line-ups change, and allow for the fact that big nights draw crowds from across the city. Lapis Spa treatments are also best booked before your stay.
The hotel is at 4441 Collins Avenue, north of South Beach, so a taxi or ride-share is the best way to reach the Art Deco district, Lincoln Road, Wynwood or downtown. Faena Hotel Miami Beach is further south on Collins Avenue. Reservations can be made online or by phone on 800-548-8886.
