Three X Co
Hidden behind a barbershop in Bangsar Shopping Centre, Three X Co ranked number 32 on Asia's 50 Best Bars 2026 and was named the best bar…
Opened in 2022 on Jalan Petaling, Penrose is a minimalist Chinatown cocktail bar led by Jon Lee, ranked number 64 in Asia's 50 Best Bars 51-100 list for 2026.
Good to know
Penrose is one of the most respected cocktail bars in Kuala Lumpur and a highlight of Chinatown's growing bar scene. It opened in August 2022 on Jalan Petaling, the old market street at the heart of Chinatown, and quickly rose up the regional rankings; it was previously named the best bar in Malaysia on the Asia's 50 Best Bars list and in 2026 appears at number 64 on the extended 51-100 list.
The bar is led by Jon Lee, and its philosophy is clear and precise. Every cocktail is built around five pillars: alcohol, flavour, taste, body and dilution, a framework that gives the drinks a balanced, polished feel. The space reflects the same approach, combining functionalism, simplicity and modernity, with classic bar-counter seating designed to create an intimate atmosphere and an original playlist that stays in the background.
Two drinks stand out. The makopa martini adds plum and lava salt to a gin and vermouth base, while the gibson, made with leek pickled in sake vinegar and shio kombu, has been described by the 50 Best organisation as one of the finest drinks in the city. The menu changes, so ask what is current, and let the bartenders steer you if you have a favourite spirit.
Because seating is mainly at the counter, Penrose works best for couples, solo drinkers and small groups who enjoy watching the bartenders at work and chatting about what they are making. Large groups may find it hard to sit together. Prices are in line with the city's other top cocktail bars. Check the bar's Instagram for current opening hours and any booking details before you go, and arrive early at weekends to secure seats at the counter.
Jalan Petaling is easy to reach on foot from anywhere in Chinatown, and Pasar Seni station is the most convenient rail stop. Several other well-regarded bars are nearby, including Cabinet 8 on Jalan Sultan, so it is easy to make an evening of it in the old city. For dinner beforehand, the Chinatown food streets and the Bib Gourmand favourites on Jalan Sultan are a short walk away.
