Why we recommend it

The Promenade du Paillon is the green spine of central Nice. It follows the course of the Paillon, the river that once divided the old town from the newer city and that now flows underground, and it links Place Masséna with the districts to the north-east. With 14.5 hectares of lawns, trees and play areas, it is the city's main park and a favourite with local families.

The best-known feature is the miroir d'eau, a water mirror of around 3,000 square metres on the edge of Place Masséna. Its 128 jets rise and fall in sequences, and misting systems create clouds of fine spray. On hot afternoons children run through the jets in swimwear, and at night the shallow sheet of water reflects the red facades of the square.

Further along, the playgrounds are built around life-size wooden marine animals, including a whale, dolphins, octopuses and a big turtle, near the Lycée Masséna. There is a zip line for children, play equipment opposite the Jean Bouin ice rink, pétanque courts and ping-pong tables. In the Jardin Albert 1er, at the seaward end, a carousel and a misty plateau paved in basalt and limestone add to the choice. Planting includes a bed of more than 2,000 carnations near the Lycée Masséna.

The park is free and opens every day from 07:00, closing at 21:00 in winter and later in summer. There are public toilets with baby changing, the paths suit buggies, and dogs are welcome. It holds the EcoJardin label for sustainable management and is part of the city's family-friendly offer.

It suits anyone needing a break between sights: parents with young children, people waiting for a tram or a dinner booking, or visitors who want somewhere green to sit without climbing Castle Hill. Allow half an hour for a stroll, or much longer if children discover the water mirror.

The park starts at Place Masséna, served by tram line 1. Along its length you pass the Opéra side of the old town, and it is a short walk to the Cours Saleya and the seafront. Note that hours shown on the tourism office page vary, so check before planning a late visit.
