Why we recommend it

Vinograf is a wine bar and restaurant on Senovážné náměstí in the New Town, a short walk from Wenceslas Square and the Municipal House. It has long been one of the best places in Prague to explore Czech and Moravian wine, which is little known abroad but has improved enormously in recent decades. The focus is on wine, seasonal cooking and professional service, and it works equally well for a glass after work or a full dinner.

The centrepiece is a wine wall, with a list chosen to help guests explore it, and sommeliers are on hand to explain what is open and suggest something to suit your taste. Ask them to introduce you to Moravian whites such as Grüner Veltliner, Riesling and Pálava, or to Czech reds, if you are new to the region. Prestige wines are poured using the Coravin system, which lets you try a glass of something special without opening a whole bottle.

The kitchen, led by chefs Andrej Mišutka and Radek David, serves an à la carte menu with three suggested wine pairings for each course, and a four-course tasting menu with a choice of pairings: Czech and Moravian, international or prestige. At lunchtime on weekdays there is a business lunch of two, three or four courses, and between 15:00 and 17:00 only tapas are served. Seasonal menus mark occasions such as St Martin's Day in November, when Czechs celebrate the first young wines of the year with roast goose. The kitchen closes at 22:00.

Vinograf is open from Monday to Friday from 11:30 to midnight and on Saturday from 16:00 to midnight, and it is closed on Sundays. Reservations can be made through the website and are recommended for dinner, especially at the end of the week. It suits couples, wine lovers and small groups, and it is a calmer and more grown-up alternative to the beer halls for an evening out. Prices are moderate to high, depending on what you drink.

Senovážné náměstí is a few minutes' walk from Náměstí Republiky metro station on line B and from the Jindřišská tram stop. The Municipal House, the Powder Gate and the top of Wenceslas Square are all close by, and the main railway station is about ten minutes away on foot.
