Hotel
Hotel Sacher Wien
A family-owned five-star hotel opened in 1876 behind the State Opera, with 152 individually designed rooms, a boutique spa and the original Café Sacher.
A large, sociable hostel beside the Naschmarkt with dorms and private rooms, its own WomBAR, a breakfast buffet and 24-hour reception, two minutes from the U4.
Good to know
Wombat's City Hostel Vienna is a well-run, modern hostel right next to the Naschmarkt, and it is one of the most popular budget places to stay in the city. The Wombat's group is known for clean, secure hostels with good facilities, and the Naschmarkt location puts guests in one of the liveliest parts of Vienna at a fraction of hotel prices.
The hostel offers a mix of shared dormitories, including female-only rooms, and private rooms, so it works for solo backpackers, friends and couples alike. Bed linen is included, and there is secure luggage storage, so you can leave bags before check-in at 14:00 or after checking out. Reception is open around the clock, which is useful for late arrivals.
The social side is a big part of the appeal. The hostel's own bar, the WomBAR, is a natural meeting place in the evening and is often busy, making it easy for solo travellers to meet people. A breakfast buffet is available each morning, and there is a guest kitchen if you want to cook, ideal with the Naschmarkt's stalls of fresh produce just outside the door.
The hostel suits budget travellers, students, solo travellers and groups of friends. Families and light sleepers may prefer a private room rather than a dorm, as the bar and common areas can be lively at night. Book early for summer, Christmas market season and major events, when the best-value beds go quickly.
The hostel is on the Rechte Wienzeile, along the Naschmarkt, about two minutes' walk from Kettenbrückengasse station on the U4. The U4 runs directly to Karlsplatz, Schwedenplatz and Schönbrunn, and connects at Landstraße/Wien Mitte with trains to and from the airport. The Naschmarkt, the Saturday flea market, the Secession, the Karlskirche and the bars and cafés of the fourth and sixth districts are all on the doorstep, and the State Opera is about 15 minutes on foot.
Prices change with demand, so booking directly through the Wombat's website lets you compare dorm and private room rates for your dates. Bring a padlock or check the hostel's locker arrangements before arrival, as you would in any hostel. Vienna adds a local accommodation tax to bills, so check whether your quoted rate includes it. On Saturday mornings, the flea market sets up right outside, which is worth an early wander before breakfast.
