Café
Thorn Tree Café
The Sarova Stanley's pavement café, built around an acacia tree where generations of travellers pinned messages for one another in the days before email.
A family-run café in Loresho that shares its space with a furniture workshop and shop, serving fresh food and coffee among sustainably made pieces.
Good to know
Wasp and Sprout is a family-run café with a difference: it is also a furniture workshop and shop. The business began as a hobby, making furniture, after its founders moved back to Nairobi in 2010, and it grew into a combined space at the Loresho Shopping Centre on Loresho Ridge where you can eat, drink coffee and browse sustainably made furniture under the same roof.
The café side focuses on fresh food and coffee, served in a relaxed setting alongside the furniture shop. Dishes that have been on the menu include a sprout burger and chilaquiles, and coffee can be ordered as a French press. Check the current menu on the website before you go, as it changes.
The retail shop and workshop make the visit more than a coffee stop. If you are interested in Kenyan design, craftsmanship or sustainable materials, it is worth leaving time to look around. Carrying large furniture home is not practical for most travellers, but smaller homewares and the chance to see a working studio are reasons enough to go. If you are planning a special trip to buy furniture, call ahead to ask what is currently in the shop. The business posts updates on Facebook and Instagram, and you can join its mailing list for news.
It suits couples and friends looking for a calm brunch, design-minded travellers, families and remote workers who want a quieter, more personal alternative to the cafés in the malls. Loresho is a green residential area, so the atmosphere is local and unhurried, especially on weekday mornings.
Opening hours are not listed on the café's homepage, so check the latest times on its website or social media pages before setting out, or call the number on the site. Loresho is to the north-west of Westlands, a short drive from Spring Valley, Lavington and Westlands, and is easiest to reach by taxi or ride-hailing app. Combine it with a visit to Spring Valley Coffee or a walk in Karura Forest for a relaxed half day away from the city centre, or follow it with lunch in Westlands, where many of Nairobi's restaurants are concentrated.
