Why we recommend it

The Pot Luck Club is part of the restaurant group of chef Luke Dale Roberts, one of the best-known names in South African dining, and it occupies the top floor of the old silo at the Old Biscuit Mill in Woodstock. The converted mill complex on Albert Road is also home to design shops, studios and the Neighbourgoods Market, and the restaurant's windows look across the city towards Table Mountain and the harbour.

The menu is built around small plates designed for sharing, which arrive as they are ready rather than in fixed courses. Flavours move freely between global influences and local ingredients, and vegetarian and pescetarian menus are available.

The restaurant opens for lunch and dinner from Monday to Saturday, and brunch is served on Sundays from 11:00. Tables are in high demand, especially for dinner and weekends, so book ahead through the contact page or by phone. Telephone reservations are taken from 08:00 to 17:00 on weekdays and from 09:00 to 17:00 on Saturdays. If your preferred date is full, the website has a waiting list that notifies you when tables open.

Sharing plates make this a good choice for small groups and couples who like to try a bit of everything. Order a few plates at a time and add more as you go. Allow around two hours. The atmosphere is relaxed but busy, and the dress code is smart casual.

Woodstock is a short drive east of the city centre. A Saturday lunch fits neatly with a morning at the Neighbourgoods Market downstairs, though the complex is very busy then and parking is limited, so a taxi or ride-hailing service is often easier. The surrounding streets have galleries and street art worth exploring before or after your meal.

The Old Biscuit Mill itself is worth a wander before or after your meal. The former biscuit factory has been converted into a complex of shops, studios, galleries and restaurants, and Luke Dale Roberts' group lists its other venues, including ones in Johannesburg and London, on its website. Arrive early to browse the design stores before your table.
